COLLEGE GUIDE TO RECYCLING
Going to college means freedom. You can stay up all night, eat pizza for breakfast, and skip class without worrying about getting caught by your parents. Swapping mom for a few roommates isn’t always fun and games though. Figuring out who’s turn it is to take out the trash can become somewhat of a daily battle, and you may find yourself longing for the simpler days when you lived at home.
We know recycling can seem overwhelming with all the rules and regulations. That’s why we’ve created our College Guide to Recycling to clear up the confusion. Hang it on your fridge for all of your roommates to see.
HERE’S A LIST OF EVERYDAY ITEMS WE USE IN COLLEGE THAT YOU CAN CONFIDENTLY RECYCLE IN STYLE:
#BINIT
PING PONG BALLS & SOLO CUPS
Whether you refer to it as Beer Pong or Beirut, college wouldn’t be the same without every school’s number one sport. Ping pong balls are a hot commodity, but what should you do with those that get dented when your opponent misses? Toss them in the recycling bin for good luck. While we’re on the subject, don’t forget to recycle those used solo cups. Better yet, wash them out to reuse next time.
*Disclaimer: check to make sure your local municipality accepts #6 plastics.
TIDE LAUNDRY DETERGENT
Doing your own laundry for the first time? Follow in mom’s footsteps and recycle your detergent bottle. She’ll be extra proud.
HUNTS KETCHUP
If you’ve been slacking on your recycling efforts, you can play catch-up by dropping your empty ketchup bottles in the recycling bin. (Yes, we went there!)
MILK JUGS
Got Milk? We know it does a body good, so we can also do the earth good by putting your empty milk jugs into the recycling bin.
BEER CANS
It wouldn’t be a frat party without the PBR, right? In college, beer can seem like a major food group and the cans pile up fast. Make sure to #BINIT at the end of the night.
RED BULL CANS
Late night study sessions at the library call for one thing: Red Bull! #BINIT once you’re finished for extra karma points.
MEAD NOTEBOOKS
Taking notes in class is a drag but nothing feels better than tossing those paper notebooks in the recycling bin at the end of the semester.
ACADEMIC PLANNER
College is all about getting organized and in this department, academic planners are your best friend. When the year is over- the only place these belong is in the recycling bin
COMPUTER PAPER
Think of how many trees dedicate their lives to getting you through college. Let’s pay it back by tossing all of our old papers and notes into the recycling bins.
RED BARON PIZZA BOX
Pizza is everyone’s favorite midnight snack and the best part is, frozen pizza boxes are recyclable because they don’t have any grease or cheese on the box like when you order delivery.
CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH BOX
Whether snacking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, all cereal boxes are recyclable - so don’t forget to #BINIT.
DESPITE WHAT YOU MAY HAVE HEARD, HERE ARE SOME ITEMS THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER RECYCLE:
DON’T FALL FOR THESE RECYCLING FAUX PAS
PAPER PLATES
Dish duty is a main topic among roommates but switching to paper isn’t always the best option. Even though they have paper in the name, once they’ve been used they can’t be recycled because even recycling plants don’t like dirty dishes.
BRIGHTLY DYED PAPER
Brightly colored paper does not belong in the recycling bin. The dyes are so intense that they can ruin an entire batch of recycled paper. Think of it like this: a red t-shirt in your load of whites. Disaster!
GLOW STICKS
Pledge week and music festivals wouldn’t be the same without glow sticks, but these party favors belong anywhere but in the recycling bin.
CUP OF NOODLES
When funds are low, Cup of Noodles tides us over until payday. Styrofoam containers aren’t accepted in recycling programs because even though they are cheap for us, the costs associated with the recycling process is too high to make it worth it.
DORITOS BAG
Stealing your roommates Doritos is a good idea until you end up eating the whole bag. When you’re done, make sure to drop the empty bag in the trash, not your recycling bin.
